The Problem
One Dynamics Shape Is Not Right For Every Frequency Range
A cymbal range, midrange body and low-end punch can need completely different attack, release, threshold and ratio behavior. Standard processing forces compromises. On an overhead track, for example, you might want a very different attack, release, threshold and ratio on your cymbals than on the low end of your shelled drums.
There are some quite good multiband compressors out there, but few offer every one of these controls at once — and far more comprehensive control could be useful for a lot of applications.
