The Problem
Static EQ Cannot Know When The Problem Appears
Often a problem frequency is too loud or too soft only in certain parts of a song. A static EQ changes that frequency all the time, including moments where no correction was needed.
In the earliest days, engineers would grab an EQ's gain knob at (hopefully) the right time and set it back when the problem passed, or switch hardware and parallel channels in and out. Automation made this broadly possible later on, but it stayed tedious and too slow for quick corrections.
